About the program

For five weeks, we meet in small groups to talk together about how to really help others: wisely, strategically, and with heart. This is not another course where someone lectures theory. It is a space for exchanging thoughts, learning tested tools for action, and meeting people who are also looking for their path to impact. Participation is free.

Who is this program for?

If you are wondering how to combine the desire to help with real action, whether you are at the beginning of your education or already working, join us. What matters is curiosity and readiness to ask demanding questions.

Why is it worth it?

Better decisions

You will gain concrete tools for making better decisions, from strategic thinking to choosing effective ways to help.

Effective altruism

You will learn the key ideas of effective altruism, a global movement that combines empathy with science.

Ways to help

You will see different paths to helping, from spare-time action and donations to a mission-driven career.

Space for conversation

You will get space for discussion with people who also want to have impact. The moderator only guides; the rest depends on the group.

A mission-driven community

You will join the Dobra Kariera and Effective Altruism community: morally ambitious people who face the most urgent social challenges.

What does it look like in practice?

  • The course lasts 5 weeks.
  • We meet once a week for 1 hour online in groups of 3-7 people.
  • Each week has a different topic and a set of materials to read or watch.
  • Meetings are held in Polish. Materials are in English, and if needed we will help you choose a tool for translating content.
  • Participation is free, but we expect your engagement: about 3 hours per week of preparation and attendance at least 4 of 5 discussions.
Each group has a moderator, but their role is not to pass on knowledge or teach content. The moderator makes sure the conversation stays on topic, every participant has room to speak, and nobody dominates the discussion. The purpose of meetings is primarily to deepen knowledge from the syllabus materials, discuss possible dilemmas, and learn different perspectives from other participants.

Syllabus

Week 1 - What is effective helping?
The values and assumptions of effective altruism. Why can prioritization, impartiality, and effectiveness criteria change the way we think about doing good?
Week 2 - Rationality and strategic thinking
Cognitive biases happen to everyone, but they can be recognized and reduced. We will also explore forecasting and counterfactual thinking: how to look at the future more rationally.
Week 3 - Global health and development
"Saving a life for $5" - what does that actually mean? This week we will see how to measure effectiveness and why the simplest interventions can be the most transformative.
Week 4 - The long-term future and existential risks
What threatens humanity's future? AI, pandemics, conflicts, and why is it worth discussing them now?
Week 5 - Your path to impact
How do you translate theory into your own decisions? In this module we will discuss three main ways to create positive impact: acting in your free time, financially supporting effective organizations, and making career choices. Together we will consider which path you can follow after the course and how.
